BROOKLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL
Washington, D.C.

Brookland is an arts and world languages campus for students grades 6-8. The school provides students a unique combination of exposure to arts, three years of language study, and high school preparation coursework.

During my two and a half years at Brookland, I was much more than a School Librarian.  I was an academic aide, a trusted advisor to students, activities coordinator, part-time course instructor and was the only staff person who brought the school its first academic win during its inaugural year.  I enjoyed my time with the students and the staff of Brookland Middle School and continue to champion their efforts via social media support.  I even stay in touch with a few of my favorite students.

Brookland 8th Grade Team Places 3rd
@ NHD D.C. 2016

On
March 23, 2016, 6 8th grade Brookland students attended and competed in the D.C. National History Day Competition, Junior Division in the 'Group Documentary' category. The students spent several weeks with myself and Instructional Coach Ms. Nancy Khuu researching, filming and editing their documentaries.
The first group's film focused on the Harlem Renaissance and how the city of Harlem where the movement was founded is in danger of being erased as gentrification spreads.
The second group focused on the history and consumerism of the world's number one soft drink, Coca-Cola and how they rose from a simple beverage to a globally recognized brand.
The Harlem Renaissance Group placed 3rd in our category, a successful achievement considering this was their first time trying a project like this and entering a contest of this magnitude. Each member received a medal, commemorative t-shirt and certificate of participation.

Below are the links to each documentary and some images from the days events.

Maximizing Minimum Space
At the end of last school year with the assistance and expertise of a parent, we took the empty space in the library storage room and turned it into a control room for a student led television show.

Small groups of students took turns filming, operating the control room and hosting their own television shows.

This year, sudents will record, edit and present weekly announcement episodes as well as school events, author visits and public performances.
